Appalling advice… a black suit looks dreadful, expensive ones looking cheap and cheap ones looking like municipal issue uniforms. Even in wool it will shine like nylon after a couple of wears. A black suit is also inappropriate for every social occasion, except for a dinner suit after 6pm.
Black does not “jive” with all colours - it clashes with few (although black & brown is pretty hideous) but enhances none except perhaps white.
The best colour for a first suit is charcoal.
Following this advice, to wear a black suit with the sleeve terminating near the base of the thumb, the wearer will look like an 11-year old in his dad’s old suit.
